Unlike other versions of Lode Runner, most of which have 100 or more levels, the NES rendition has just 50. The trademark edit mode is included, but you can't save your creations. Another problem is the large size of the characters, ladders and other items, which forces the use of a scrolling playfield. Since you can't see the entire screen at once, it's easy to unknowingly walk into a trap or get blindsided by an enemy. On the positive side, the game has flawless controls. Negotiating the ladders and platforms and digging holes is silky smooth. Although flawed compared to earlier renditions on other platforms, Lode Runner for the NES is still good, challenging fun.
