4ft USB 2.0 Male To Firewire iEEE 1394 4 Pin Male iLink Adapter Cable Cord

A very cheap lesson to learn that iEEE 1394 and USB are incompatible
I have received exactly what I was looking for, the product is of a perfectly good manufacture and quality, did exactly what it was speficied to do - an USB connector on one end and a Firewire connector on the other connected by a high quality shielded cable. So far so good. Of course when I connected the laptop and the old Digital 8 videocamera nothing happened, so I started googling the issue and soon realised that while the two connectors look remotely similar, the data transfer protocols are completely incompatible - firewire is continuous data stream, while USB sends data packets. Hence there is no sense connecting an USB and a Firewire port - there is no way the two will communicate with each other. $1.55 was a fairly cheap price to pay to learn this. There is no way you can connect a Firewire device to a computer that has no Firewire port, period. The cable is pretty, but it has zero practical use. Anyone for whom I saved $1.55 owes me a beer :)
