Happy the Man return on top form!
Having enjoyed previous outings from Happy the Man, way back in the 70s, I was delighted to see the first new release in 25 years hit the shops. The band's roots are firmly planted in good ol'fashioned progressive rock, high on swirling keyboards which dominate the mainly instrumental tracks, but with a delightfully mellow sound to what is very intricate music. Let's face it, the guys are no spring chickens now and it takes some guts to get together and hope that the magic is still there and, most importantly, that there are folks out here prepared to shell out for it. Well the answer to both is an emphatic "YES"! With a tongue-in-cheek title, "The Muse Awakens" is a great return to form and a great starting point for prog fans who have yet to encounter the band. "Contemporary Insanity" opens the album with a tightness of old as the keyboard bounces adroitly from chord to chord - fabulous start! Throughout the disc there are some great moments of jazz which combine surprisingly well with the out-and-out prog feel - the title track and "Stepping through Time" are good examples where Frank Wyatt's sax-work shines through. There's so much to enjoy in this album, so many colours to brighten it up, it's a fresh take on a seasoned sound. The cover itself complements the album perfectly, a true progressive art tour-de-force! I can thoroughly recommend this album to fans of keyboard-based prog rock - it's great fun and it's performed supremely well. Enjoy!
