With 30 different characters to play, and a database of more than 2,000 historical chess matches, Fritz Chess aims to make one of the world's oldest board games accessible to novices and grand masters alike. A coach offers tips, advice, and historical references as players take on a variety of different characters, from the dense but powerful Brute, to the underhanded Merchant, with the ultimate goal of defeating Fritz "The Black King" himself. In addition to "Classic" chess, gamers can also test their skill at the popular variants "Chess 960," in which the beginning order of the pieces is randomized, and "Giveaway," where to goal is to actually lose all pieces. Fritz Chess keeps track of players' "Elo" scores to determine their skill, and there are a number of chess puzzles included, from problems that can be solved with a single move, to complex challenges requiring dozens of moves. Gamers in search of a human challenge can take on a friend in all three game modes.
