'A welcome look at vents and seep biology in tandem, this synthesis provides more than the sum of two ecosystems'. Lisa Levin, Integrative Oceanography Division Scripps Institution of Oceanography, California, USA 'The discovery of chemically-reducing seafloor vents and the lush communities that they host rates as one of the most exciting scientific discoveries of the past century. As our exploration of the oceans has continued the wide diversity of chemosynthetic ecosystems present (vents, seeps, large organic falls, oxygen minimum zones) has continued to expand and, so too, our appreciation of the extremes under which life can exist. This field is now helping to shape, and revealing ideal natural laboratories in which to test, fast-changing theories on the origins of life on Earth and the potential for life beyond our home planet. This timely compilation of papers from an international team of experts, therefore, should provide a compelling read for a broad spectrum of life, ocean, earth and space scientists, ranging from the graduate student level to the most senior professionals in any of the above disciplines.' Synopsis
Oases of life around black smokers and hydrocarbon seeps in the deep-sea were among the most surprising scientific discoveries of the past three decades. These ecosystems are dominated by animals having symbiotic relationships with chemoautotrophic bacteria. Their study developed into an international, interdisciplinary venture where scientists develop new technologies to work in some of the most extreme places on Earth. This book highlights discoveries, developments, and advances made during the past 10 years, including remarkable cases of host-symbiont coevolution, worms living on frozen methane, and a fossil record providing insights into the dynamic history of these ecosystems since the Paleozoic., 1. Introduction: Chemosythetically-driven ecosystems in the deep sea Steffen Kiel and Paul A. Tyler 2. Genetics and evolution of deep-sea chemosynthetic bacteria and their invertebrate hosts Robert C. Vrijenhoek 3. Microbial habitats associated with deep-sea hydrothermal vent invertebrates: insights from microanalysis and geochemical modeling Nadine Le Bris and Françoise Gaill 4. Microbial chemofossils in specific marine hydrothermal and methane cold seep settings Martin Blumenberg 5. Chemosymbiotic bivalves John D Taylor and Emily A Glover 6. The diversity of deep-sea mussels and their bacterial symbioses Sébastien Duperron 7. Gastropods from Recent hot vents and cold seeps: systematics, diversity and life strategies Takenori Sasaki, Anders Warén, Yasunori Kano, Takashi Okutani and Katsunori Fujikura 8. The fossil record of vent and seep mollusks Steffen Kiel 9. Brachiopods from ancient hydrocarbon seeps and hydrothermal vents Michael R Sandy 10. Unusual habitats and organisms associated with the cold seeps of the Gulf of Mexico Erik E Cordes, Stèphane Hourdez and Harry H Roberts 11. Biological communities at marine shallow-water vent and seep sites Paul R Dando 12. Japan: Vents and Seeps in Clo, This book highlights recent advances in a range of vent and seep-related topics, including cases of host-symbiont coevolution, worms living on frozen methane, and a fossil record providing insights into the history of these ecosystems since the Paleozoic.

Book came packaged well to avoid damage, in great condition. Not sure if the seller delayed shipping or if usps didn’t update the shipping, which is highly likely. Still received and we are happy with our purchase. I had trouble looking up tracking due to the company they used but seller found usps tracking and sent that over quickly. Sellers communication was excellent. Would buy from again. Item as described.

I don't give negatives; However, description was not correct; No price guide was included in this book.As you will see in book pic shown; title states price guide included, no price guide inside. Communication poor, description, no communication price guide missing from this book. Shipping time was weeks before it was even shipped. Blamed the shipping on warehouse. You own & operate a business; your warehouse is not up to standards you change who you do business with. It's your responsibility.

Item arrived as described and adequately packaged. Ridiculously long shipping time. Seller posts incorrect tracking number and lists the item as shipped. Contacted seller for correct tracking, received a new tracking number with the warning that the number won’t be “live” until the item is shipped. Will you get your item? Yeah, probably. Count on it being delivered 2-3 weeks longer than expected.
