In 1973, twenty-seven years of Everly harmony turned disharmonious, with Phil walking off the stage in the middle of a performance. Their peerless harmonies would not be heard again until this very moving reunion at the Royal Albert Hall in September, 1983. The assembled band includes guitarist Albert Lee (still touring with them), but the focus is on Don and Phil's harmonies, which seem ageless on such classics as "Cryin' in the Rain" and the concert finale, "Let It Be Me." This 65-minute video is a shortened version of the original HBO broadcast, but it's long enough to include nineteen songs, including hits from the Cadence years ("Bye Bye Love," "Wake up Little Susie," "All I Have to Do Is Dream") and their underrated Warner Brothers years ("Cathy's Clown," "Walk Right Back," "Love Is Strange"). It's a shame they chose not to sing their 1960 hit, "Like Strangers," as it would have summed up the whole reunion: "Let's forget that we were angry and swear not to be like strangers anymore." ~ Dennis MacDonald, Roundup Newsletter
