"Murphy's book is an important contribution to academic understanding of singer-songwriter repertoires and flexible meter. Her attention to the work of Buffy Sainte-Marie offers a long-overdue analytical examination of one of the most important Indigenous popular music artists of the last hundred years. Murphy's work highlights Sainte-Marie's advocacy for Indigenous rights alongside analytical details, modeling one of many paths forward in the ongoing process of decolonizing music theory and analysis." -- Dr. Robin Attas, Educational Developer, Equity Diversity Inclusion, Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, University of Manitoba "Times a Changin' provides a much-needed and insightful study of musical techniques used by the singer-songwriters of the 1960s and 1970s--artists whose lyrics and voices have resonated deeply in the history of popular music but whose creative approaches to musical time have been largely unaccounted for until now. Readers interested in these artists, and in the theory and analysis of meter in popular music, will come away from this illuminating book with new appreciation for how singer-songwriters have been able to connect so profoundly with their audiences." -- Joti Rockwell, Associate Professor of Music, Pomona College, "Murphy's book is an important contribution to academic understanding of singer-songwriter repertoires and flexible meter. Synopsis
How did emerging singer-songwriters in the 1960s and 1970s develop traditions for musical self-expression? This book takes a new listen to the music of beloved songwriters Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Paul Simon, and Cat Stevens to show how they used malleable metric settings as an important part of their self-expressive toolkit in performance., In 1960s and 1970s singer-songwriter music, some artists used malleable metric settings alongside other features of self-expression in performance. This resulted in songs with extremes of self-expressive timing flexibility that cannot be accounted for using a single conception of meter. This book proposes a theory of flexible meter that recasts metric structure as encompassing the variety of metric scenarios presented by the self-expressive performance practice of singer-songwriters, from metric regularity to metric ambiguity, and vacillations between these two possibilities. Author Nancy Murphy explores performances by Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Paul Simon, and Cat Stevens to investigate the individual metric style of each artist and how their flexible metric techniques contribute to the self-expressive rhetoric of the singer-songwriter performance tradition.

2 volumes of Pogo comic strips, new and in perfect condition. Price was good, but shipping cost ($30 for two books) seems like a lot for how long it took to get delivered (23 days from Illinois to Spain). Also, seller communication was not great. First two times I wrote, their response did not address question. Third response explained at length about the private courier service they use and how it should take 1-10 business days to deliver. Maybe they should consider a different courier service.

The item was described to a Tee. Very good communication. Shipping was just a little slow. The box the set of books comes in was damaged (bent corners) due to packaging. Not a deal breaker because the grand kids will not store in that box; might be if it were to be given as a present. The three books in the box arrived in prefect shape. I WOULD purchase from greatbookprices1 again in the future. Thanks

*Same as the other review* Purchased two box sets from this seller with one being advertised as "like new" but was delivered as if it was actually new. Shipping time was a little slow, takes about 10 days to ship out and it takes a while to get through the system. But the packing was great and I'm still overall happy with my purchase.
