Synopsis
Published in time for the Christmas Truce 1914 - Football Remembers commemoration featuring an historic re-enactment of the Christmas match at Saint-Yvon., On Christmas Eve, 1914, after four months of intense, bloody fighting in Flanders between entrenched British and German soldiers, something miraculous happened. The guns fell silent as Christmas approached, and the soldiers on both sides started singing instead of shooting. Then, on Christmas Day, the two sides emerged from their trenches and met in No Man's Land. Some chased rabbits. Others, more memorably, played soccer. It was a rare moment of peace--and even beauty--amid horrible carnage. The Christmas Match tells that story through the eyes of two soldiers--Albert Schmidt, a Saxon, and Jimmy Coyle, a Scot--who were in units that played a Christmas Day match against each other. Pehr Thermaenius traces their stories through military archives, taking the pair from mobilization in August to the frozen mud of Flanders in December, showing the making of soldiers, the traumas of war, and the emergence--brief, but real--of hope within that Christmas Day sporting truce. A brilliantly realized account of an unforgettable moment in European history, The Christmas Match is history at its up-close, deeply human best., After four months of intense fighting, the war in Flanders between German and British soldiers fell silent on Christmas Eve 1914. The soldiers started singing instead of shooting. On Christmas Day they came out of their trenches and met in No Man's Land. Some chased rabbits. Some played football. This true story is about two footballers and soldiers, one Saxon and one Scot, who were in units that played a match in a field between the French villages Houplines and Frelinghien. Scotsman Jimmy Coyle had played professional football before the war. Saxon Albert Schmidt played in the third team for his local club. On Christmas afternoon they each got the chance to defeat their opponents without weapons. Pehr Thermaenius has tracked both Jimmy's and Albert's stories through military archives; from mobilization in August to the hard frozen mud in that field in Flanders that became a football field on Christmas Day. The story of the football match is a light in the darkness as the world remembers the tragic waste of a hundred years ago.

- _***d (6)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.
- l***c (29)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoItem in condition described. The shipment tracking was completely opaque and shipping was slow. The seller used a third-party shipping solution provider that gave a USPS tracking number, but, USPS had no real tracking info. I was not able to see any delivery estimate until the day before it arrived. When the delivery date estimate finally materialized, it was off by two days, saying arrival would be on e.g. the 5th when it actually arrived on the 3rd.
- b***3 (502)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoAs the title mentions awesomebooksusa, most books have been rarely awesome but the book prices have been almost generous, granted. Unbelievable services : 3 day international shipping, prompt dispatch, newly book condition, provided tracking, secure package, exactly received book, and safe deliveries. My gratitude to the seller’s thoughts of the needy buyers sending the wanted books to the new residence. Many thanks! Arabella
