In the post-World War I American climate of isolationism, nativism, democratic expansion of civic rights, and consumerism, Italian-born star Rodolfo Valentino and Italy's dictator Benito Mussolini became surprising paragons of authoritarian male power and mass appeal. Drawing on extensive archival research in the United States and Italy, Giorgio Bertellini's work shows how their popularity, both political and erotic, largely depended on the efforts of public opinion managers, including publicists, journalists, and even ambassadors. Beyond the democratic celebrations of the Jazz Age, the promotion of their charismatic masculinity through spectacle and press coverage inaugurated the now-familiar convergence of popular celebrity and political authority. This is the first volume in the new Cinema Cultures in Contact series, coedited by Giorgio Bertellini, Richard Abel, and Matthew Solomon. Item was not in “very good” condition. A couple of folded pages I can take. Maybe even a slight crack in the spine. However, this book had stained/soiled pages that looked like someone spilled some weird liquid. It was extremely worn down and not at all in described condition.

No reputable bookseller would rate this book as in "Very good": that description is flat-out duplicitous. The book is ex-library with the usual stamps throughout (which alone disqualifies it from a "very good" rating; the spine is badly cocked, the front cover hinge is giving out, the ffep has been excised and the dust jacket, though present, is ratty, with the call number sticker on the spine. Fair-to-poor would be the appropriate assesment of the book's condition.

"Very good" is a stretch as a description of the condition of this book, but not outright deceptive. No effort was made in packing to minimize damage from rough handling. Still, a good deal at the price.
