Synopsis
During the depths of the Great Depression President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps, better known as the "CCC", the most popular of his "New Deal" programs. This federal agency, which existed from 1933 to 1943, took millions of men and boys off of welfare rolls and sent them to thousands of camps around the country. In exchange for their upkeep and a small salary these "enrollees", as they were called, worked on public service projects near the camps. The results of their labor are evident all over the country even today. More importantly, the CCC gave these men and boys hope, and it instilled in them a work ethic and a sense of responsibility that remained with them throughout their lives. The CCC proved to be one of the most successful and inspiring peacetime endeavors ever undertaken by the Federal Government. This book describes the workings of the CCC in Washington, DC and in the camps. The histories of two CCC camps are given in some detail in order for the reader to gain some understanding of both the typical duties and the widely varying tasks that the CCC performed.
