A strategy RPG from the makers of Knights in the Nightmare, Gungnir puts gamers in the land of Gargandia during a struggle between the upper-class Daltania and the peasant-class Leonica, who are discriminated against because they are considered cursed. As the 15-year-old Julio Raguel, players join a group of Leonica and sympathetic Daltania as they fight against the unjust ruling class. Battles occur on multi-level stages and are viewed from an isometric perspective, with gamers moving their party around grids and capturing key battlefield zones to earn Tactics Points.
There are 12 different generic units in Gungnir, including Assassins, Paladins, and Witches, and players can form parties of up to ten characters as they battle against eight different monster classes. Accrued Tactics Points can be used to scramble the party's attack order, perform team attacks, or use the titular Gungnir lance to summon demons and perform screen-filling field attacks. There are nine points at which gamers must make decisions that will affect the story and ultimate conclusion they see, and an "Easy" mode is included to help those who find the game too difficult.
