Produced for the federation that now comprises modern Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, the French Indo China Piastre, coined in 1908, is roughly the size of an American 50 cent piece and made of silver with an ASW (actual silver weight) of 0.7812 ounces. The coin itself weighs 27 grams and features a seated lady liberty on the front, holding a fasces (a bundle of rods with an ax blade projecting from the top) to symbolize power and authority. Behind lady liberty is an almost completely hidden anchor and to her right are stands of wheat. Republique Francais is written above her head, with 1908 and BARRE written below. On the back of the coin is the denomination encircled in a wreath, with the words Inde-Chine Francaise and Titre 0.900 Poids 27 GR lining the perimeter. 13,986,000 of the 1908 Piastre were minted.
