Modeled after Duke's inaugural 3D outing on the PC, Torus Games' Duke Nukem Advance presents players with a new adventure starring the sarcastic, muscle-bound protagonist. As Duke Nukem, players find themselves (yet again) at the forefront of an intergalactic war, only this time Duke is working for the government. At the behest of General Graves, he will traverse the globe, fighting off hordes of extraterrestrial invaders in such diverse locales as Egypt, Australia, and Area 51. To do this, he's equipped with an arsenal of suitably powerful weapons that include such customary implements as the handgun, shotgun, rocket-propelled grenade, and assault rifle, along with perennial Duke Nukem favorites: the shrink ray, freeze ray, and pipe bombs.
Prior to each level, hand-drawn cut-scenes and text messages offer background information, while a briefing from General Graves informs the player of any pertinent mission objectives. While fending off waves of enemy attackers, players will need to acquire color-coded keycards in order to pass thorough the doors and other obstacles blocking your path. Also, by making use of Duke's jump ability and being able to look around freely, players can discover hidden areas filled with helpful items such as ammunition and health kits. Accompanying the onscreen action are a handful of Duke Nukem's famous quips. The multiplayer portion of the title supports up to four simultaneously, though each player requires a copy of the game. Two multiplayer modes are available: Deathmatch and Tag.
