In the future, sports such as football and baseball will take a backseat to BattleSport, where armored tanks meet in an arena and fight fiercely to score on the opposite team's goal. In BattleSport, you choose from six different characters with names like Brick, Snyper, and Shadow. Next, you create your own tank, selecting traits such as speed, shield strength and overall firepower. These craft aren't tanks in the traditional sense, but are more on par with vehicles from Namco's Cyber Sled. The ultimate goal is not to destroy the other player but to maneuver a small ball into the other team's goal.
This isn't to say that BattleSport ignores the "battle" portion of its name. Tanks are armed with weapons such as missiles and machine guns, and can acquire more within the arenas themselves. Attacking opposing tanks will cause them to lose control of the ball, and causing enough damage will make them explode. If your tank is destroyed, you're out of the game for a few precious seconds, leaving your goal undefended. In addition to firepower, tanks can also receive power-ups that include speed boosts and invisibility.
There are over 50 different arenas to choose from in BattleSport, with all shapes and sizes of playfields represented. A single player can battle the computer, or two players can hash it out via split-screen. There is a tournament mode that keeps your stats over the course of an entire season. To make sure the frame rate stays up to speed, there is an option to play in textured or untextured mode.
