"Kal is the curator of the South East Asia Section of the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. Yogya silverware was developed in the city Yogyakarta (Yogya) and the nearby town of Kotagede. Although this well-researched exhibition catalog focuses on Yogya 'Golden Age' silverware of 1930-42, it also surveys the history of the Javanese craft from before the Dutch Colonial period to the present. The organized, accessible text, exquisite illustrations, and detailed photographs follow the technical and aesthetic development of the silver trade in Indonesia, showing how styles and decoration were dramatically influenced by Buddhist, Hindu, and Islamic religious mores and by other social developments. The market transition from ceremonial Javanese court silver to European luxury items, the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau, and the demands of the tourist trade are all thoroughly addressed. An extensive list of silversmith's initials and names is included in an appendix that curators and collectors will find very helpful. Art historians and artisans will also benefit from taking a close look at this indispensable reference guide. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels." -- C. A.
