Reviews
"The book describes in detail a rich mathematical framework out of which a new physical description of nature can emerge. The chapters are well organized; the presentation is clear, rigorous, very attractive, and accessible to mathematical as well as theoretical physicists. It is recommended to everyone who wants to learn more about the fascinating field of the foundations of physics and the continuing efforts scientists are making to formulate a clear and coherent picture of physical phenomena." - Angelo Bassi, Universitat Munchen, "This is a bold book, a provocative text, that may help many readers to have a better understanding of the foundations of quantum theories." American Mathematical Society

Synopsis
Quantum mechanics is our most successful physical theory. However, it raises conceptual issues that have perplexed physicists and philosophers of science for decades. This 2004 book develops an approach, based on the proposal that quantum theory is not a complete, final theory, but is in fact an emergent phenomenon arising from a deeper level of dynamics. The dynamics at this deeper level are taken to be an extension of classical dynamics to non-commuting matrix variables, with cyclic permutation inside a trace used as the basic calculational tool. With plausible assumptions, quantum theory is shown to emerge as the statistical thermodynamics of this underlying theory, with the canonical commutation/anticommutation relations derived from a generalized equipartition theorem. Brownian motion corrections to this thermodynamics are argued to lead to state vector reduction and to the probabilistic interpretation of quantum theory, making contact with phenomenological proposals for stochastic modifications to Schrödinger dynamics., Quantum mechanics is our most successful physical theory but raises conceptual issues that perplex physicists and philosophers of science. - o***1 (1096)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoHave bought from this seller many times before & it always been a good experience-this time was no exception! Book was bought “buy it now” at an excellent price for a hardcover…shipping was pretty good & book was shipped in a bag type mailer that was reinforced by wrapping around the book twice …I was impressed by the condition of the book too! It was listed in the description as good but I felt the book could have been listed as “like new” (yes that good!) highly recommend this seller!
- 4***e (51)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoBook well packaged and despatched promptly although it took 2 weeks to arrive. At the same time a book ordered on the same day from a different US seller arrived a week earlier and postage was a lot cheaper. Book in good condition as described.
- e***r (527)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Ultimi 6 mesiAcquisto verificatoThis was an order for two books, shipped together. Very few sellers can match the care, consideration and diligence that this seller has shown me. The packaging was phenomenal and shipping appears to have been done on the same day as the order. Pricing was very fair. Five stars are not enough but it's all I can do for now. My sincerest thanks!!!
