HIV and depression have been intimately associated since the beginning of the epidemic, and depression often seems the only possible response to such a devastating illness. However, the inevitability of profound loss should not blind providers to the presence of clinical depression. HIV and Depression: Context and Care, the fifth volume in the UCSF AIDS Health Project's Monograph Series, offers practical advice for frontline providers on the assessment and treatment of depression. It emphasizes the contexts in which depression care occurs, including discussions of normal sadness versus clinical depression, the cultural context in which each client lives, and the clinical contexts in which depression unfolds. Throughout, the monograph stresses two messages: clinical levels of depression should not be seen as "normal" or expected outcomes of having HIV disease, and clinical depression is eminently treatable.
