Before Jay-Z fashioned himself into hip-hop's most notorious capitalist, he was a street hustler from the projects who rapped about what he knew, and was very, very good at it. On his debut disc, Jay-Z hits you with rap's trends – Mary J. Blige riffs, Foxy Brown rhymes, Isley Brothers loops and more fashion info than Cindy Crawford. Released in the aftermath of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, The Predator radiates tension. Ice Cube infuses nearly every song, with the hostile mood of the era. Even the album's most laid-back moment, "It Was a Good Day" emits a quiet sense of violent anxiety. Granted, Ice Cube's previous albums had been far from gentle, but they were filled with a different kind of rage. Here, Ice Cube is more focused. He found a relevant episode to magnify with the riots, and he doesn't hold back.

Pharrell Williams (aka Skate Board P) might've considered suffocating himself out of envy with his Bathing Ape sweatshirt when he first heard the album's lead single, "Kick, Push", dubbed a skate-rap classic well before 'Food and Liquor' hit shelves. Like nothing else in the mainstream or underground, its subject matter –skater boy meets skater girl– and appealing early-'90s throwback production finally broke the doors down for Fiasco's solo career. One of the smartest hip-hop discs of 2006.
