Omni review of the Fluke Microtest Omniscanner Lt 1 & 2
The Omniscanner and Omniscanner 2 are trusted and tested Cable analyzer equipment. Fluke bought Microtest out in 2001 and the Omniscanner became part of the Fluke Family of testers. First off right off the bat I will say that all Omniscanners will need to have batteries rebuilt if they have original batteries, and each battery can be rebuilt for about 40 dollars a piece. The Omniscanner 1 stores all results on the on board memory vrs the Omniscanner 2 stores data on a removable SD data card. These units can perform CAT6 calculations, SM/MM analysis with the appropriate modules seamlessly. The user interface is extremely well built complemented by the keypad make data entry easy. The Officer Locator function makes finding 12 drops at ones a breeze. The Fluke LIA-101 Universal permalink adapter is a must for this set, the construction of these modules resists the wear and tear of stranded cables and when it does degrade the onboard firmware re baselines its self to report the quality of the cable and not generate false positives. You also have a wide assortment of DSP PMXX modules to utilize! Be sure to invest in the DSP PL-Cal module to perform field calibration of your permalink adapters. These units are tanks I have had 2 of these units fail out of 40 that my company and field teams have used. By comparison I have had more Flukes fail for boot errors or power on failures and due to the scarcity of parts they are now paper weights. I currently have 12 Fluke DSP 4XXX series that are dead. One draw back to the Omniscanner 2 is that it uses the same LCD type as the Fluke DSP 4XXX series and bothe are subject to horizontal black lines, due to a break down of the conductive elastomeric strip on the lcd motherboard or are subject to the dead pixels due to exposure to extreme cold temperatures for long periods of time. The Oniscanner 1 does not have any LCD issues at all. All reports are downloaded with Flukes LinkWare Cable Management software you will want 6.2 LinkWare software or higher. You will also want to make sure you are running the latest Firmware for these units which is 6.12. Some modules for the Omniscanner are hard to come by particularly the Single Mode fibe modules and are priced around the same as the Fluke DSP 4XXX series FTA single mode modules Omniscanners store all calibration data references within the unit versus the Fluke DSP 4XXX series requires a separate module to perform this function and it can be upwards of 200 USD for this module

These units are user friendly and come with tons of options. First off I will say generally batteries usually have to be replaced if they are original. There are battery rebuild services available. You can get a Wirescope 350 as low as 150 dollars with modules! The batteries average about 199 a piece, shop around you may find a better price. But if you can find a unit with good batteries for less than 500 jump on it.

First off this is a Fluke product, that means quality and tons of surplus parts due to its popularity. Yes it’s unsupported but there are dozens of 2nd 3rd party calibration/ repair facilities still exist for this platform. This platform offers outstanding tier 1 performance 22 second CAT6a certification and 9 second Cat6 certification. Don’t upgrade to the Versiv DSX SERIES unless your customers state it specifically IN YOUR STATMENT OF WORK . This unit does it all for cheaper!! The DSP SERIES is still being supported by 3rd party vendors and that series was ended in 2011, so there is plenty of life in this platform with out the expensive overhead that Fluke tries to push on us small companies. A Full DSX KIT COSTS ABOUT 18-30k where you can get the same performance out of a DTX for about 4K. So if you have the capital to get a DSX FOR ALL YOUR EMPLOYEES more power to you, but if your like me I would get Several DTX units for the same price!!
