East African Art will offer over 4,000 paintings and over 2,000 wood sculptures . The paintings are from the Sil Collection of classic Tingatinga art work acquired by collectors between 1968 and 2006. The wood sculptures come from the BLACKWOOD SCULPTURE collection of over 2,000 works from the mid-1950s through 2006 acquired by collectors.
The Tingatinga style developed by E.S. TINGATINGA and his followers used enamel paints on Masonite board. Created by the self-taught street artist Tingatinga a few years after Tanzania became a country it has become the first art genre to be unique to that country. The delightful works have been collected around the globe including museums. The Sil Collection consists of the classic style using Masonite instead of canvas.
Makonde sculpture is a carving form originated in Dar es Salaam before the formation of Tanzania. The Makonde carving was done in blackwood with hammer and chisel. Blackwood is now the most valuable wood in the world.
