Set in Indochina, the story centers around British journalist Thomas Fowler (Michael Redgrave) and a character known only as "The American" (Audie Murphy). As the country is gripped ever-tighter by the Communist uprising, the coupling find themselves in a battle over both their personal beliefs, and a woman whom they both desire and whose views they wish to mould into their own.
