He played 12 seasons with the Redbirds (1958-1969), led the league twice in at-bats and once in plate appearances and hits. When he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1969, Flood took the move personally and felt that a club should not have the right to “own” a player, arguing that the “reserve clause” was against the anti-trust laws.
