If you’d like to have a powerful digital camera with a big zoom lens, but you want it in a compact package, the Canon PowerShot ELPH 340 HS may be just right for you. Also known as the IXUS 265 HS (its European designation), this little black powerhouse is small enough to fit in your pocket while still being packed with the features of a full-size camera.Canon has managed to design a 25–300mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens with a f/3.6 to f/7.0 aperture into a 4-inch wide body--a little bigger than a credit card. The 12x optical zoom is built to Canon’s exacting standards with enough reach to pull in those distant subjects. The full range of the lens covers the entire range of the most commonly used focal lengths and then some. In addition, this PowerShot also has a 4x+ digital zoom for even greater reach.That lens also takes advantage of Canon’s outstanding image stabilization system, which uses scene detection to determine the best possible way to apply stabilization. As a result, you can expect to be able to shoot a photo as much as 4 stops slower than the traditional 1/focal length rule of thumb.This Canon PowerShot has a 16MP CMOS APS-C size sensor. Like other Canon digital cameras, this model processes the images using the company's advanced Digic 4+ image processor and stores images on SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards. Images are stored as JPEGs in either fine or superfine format. Exposure on this PowerShot is determined with a choice of multi-spot, center-weighted, or spot metering. The ISO settings range from 100 to 3200 and can be set manually or automatically.You have a number of options for selecting your shutter speed and aperture settings, including hybrid auto and manual as well as Canon’s familiar scene modes. Those include Portrait, High-Speed Burst, and Low Light/Handheld. In addition, the built-in flash provides a very comfortable reach of about 13 feet, and the ELPH can shoot in continuous mode up to 3.9 shots per second. You can choose a number of autofocus modes, including contrast detection, multi-area, center spot, single point, continuous autofocus, or face detection.The continuous autofocus is particularly useful for shooting video, which the ELPH does with ease. The camera shoots full HD video at 1920 by 1280 resolution at 30 fps and is equipped with a mono microphone to record audio. You also have the option of two lower resolution settings.When it comes time to offload your pictures or video, the ELPH offers the convenience of native Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity. With 802.11 b/g/n compatibility, you can transfer shots or even control the camera with the free Canon apps. In addition, the ELPH offers an HDMI port for wired transfer.The 3-inch screen on the back of the camera serves as both a preview screen when shooting and a review screen. With its built-in speaker, you can even watch your videos right on the spot. Power is provided by a rechargeable NB-11LH which is rated for nearly 200 shots per charge. Both the battery and the SD card slip in from the bottom of the ELPH camera.
