<h2>Jaime Hernandez</h2><p>The 1986-S Statue of Liberty Half Dollar was produced in order to commemorate the Statue of Liberty, which is located in New York.<br /><br /><strong>Obverse:</strong> The obverse predominately portrays an image of the Statue of Liberty with a large and radiant sun in the background. Lady Liberty is dressed in a garment and wearing a crown filled with rays. On Lady Liberty’s right hand she is holding an ignited torch. The words Liberty and in God We Trust elegantly surround the top portion of the coins design. Below Lady Liberty is the date 1986, or the date in which the coins were issued. <br /><br /><strong>Reverse:</strong> The reverse of the coin features four individuals, a child, two women and a gentleman with their luggage and bags right next to them. More than likely, they are all immigrants who are just arriving to New York. In the background, the New York Harbor and the city are also noticeable. The words United States of America and the words A Nation of Immigrants are displayed towards the top of the design. Below the featured design, are the words E Pluribus Unum and Half Dollar.<br /><br /><strong>History:</strong> The Statue of Liberty sits on a 12 acre island in New York. It stands over 300 ft tall from the ground up. Most significantly, for many years it has been the first glimpse of the United States for many immigrants when they first arrived to the U.S. by ship. <br /><br />Furthermore, the Statue of Liberty Half Dollar is a significant coin as it reminds us of the relationship between both France and the United States. On October 28, of 1886, France presented the Statue of Liberty to the U.S. in order to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence and to commemorate the bond and friendship between both countries. <br /><br /><strong>Issue Price:</strong> The clad 1986-S Statue of Liberty Commemorative Half Dollar was sold directly by the U.S Mint at a pre issue price of $6.50 each coin. The regular issue price was then set at $7.50 for each coin. <br /><br />The Mint also offered a clad Uncirculated1986 half dollar version with the same design. The Mint also offered a gold 1986 $5 proof and uncirculated version of this design. Both proof and uncirculated coins were struck at the West Point Minting Facility.</p>
