"Brilliant and utterly readable . . . Reads much like an adventure story that offers fine access to this highly detailed subject." --Library Journal on The Terra Cotta Army, "John Man's engaging and diverting study of the historical Xanadu renders the truths as beguiling as the mythology . . . with a combination of travel writing, historical analysis and anecdote, Man uses Xanadu almost as a keyhole through which to describe larger events."  --Scotland on Sunday, "Deploying the same lively style that attracted readers to his Genghis Kahn, Man transforms a forbidding barrier into an inviting passageway into Asian culture."  — Booklist on  The Great Wall, "An in-the-footsteps-of-Marco-Polo journey through Europe to China which really makes you feel you are wearing Polo's threadbare, sweat-stained slippers as you go." -- The Scotsman "John Man's engaging and diverting study of the historical Xanadu renders the truths as beguiling as the mythology... with a combination of travel writing, historical analysis and anecdote, Man uses Xanadu almost as a keyhole through which to describe larger events." --Scotland on Sunday "An engaging piece of storytelling and a very companionable journey of exploration." --Guardian, I have read everything written on Marco Polo, and John Man's Xanadu is, by far, my favorite book on the subject. It's not only an over-due and important historical study, it's an entertaining ride every step of the way. As a researcher, John Man not only puts himself on the very ground that Marco traversed, he takes us with him on the epic journey., "An in-the-footsteps-of-Marco-Polo journey through Europe to China which really makes you feel you are wearing Polo's threadbare, sweat-stained slippers as you go." --The Scotsman "John Man's engaging and diverting study of the historical Xanadu renders the truths as beguiling as the mythology... with a combination of travel writing, historical analysis and anecdote, Man uses Xanadu almost as a keyhole through which to describe larger events." --Scotland on Sunday "An engaging piece of storytelling and a very companionable journey of exploration." --Guardian, "Deploying the same lively style that attracted readers to his Genghis Kahn, Man transforms a forbidding barrier into an inviting passageway into Asian culture." -- Booklist on The Great Wall, "John Man's engaging and diverting study of the historical Xanadu renders the truths as beguiling as the mythology . . . with a combination of travel writing, historical analysis and anecdote, Man uses Xanadu almost as a keyhole through which to describe larger events."  —Scotland on Sunday, "Deploying the same lively style that attracted readers to his Genghis Kahn, Man transforms a forbidding barrier into an inviting passageway into Asian culture."  -- Booklist on  The Great Wall, "John Man's engaging and diverting study of the historical Xanadu renders the truths as beguiling as the mythology . . . with a combination of travel writing, historical analysis and anecdote, Man uses Xanadu almost as a keyhole through which to describe larger events." --Scotland on Sunday, "Brilliant and utterly readable . . . Tried and trusted, Bond has helped millions of children achieve 11 plus success., **A SOURCE FOR MARCO POLO A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES** Marco Polo's journey from Venice through Europe and most of Asia to the court of Kublai Khan in China is one of the most audacious in history. His account of his experiences known simply as The Travels uncovered an entirely new world of emperors and concubines great buildings - 'stately pleasure domes' in Coleridge's dreaming - huge armies and imperial riches. His book shaped the West's understanding of China for hundreds of years. John Man travelled in Marco's footsteps to Xanadu in search of the truth behind Marco's stories; to separate legend from fact. Drawing on his own journey archaeology and archival study John Man paints a vivid picture of the man behind the myth and the true story of the great court of Kublai Khan., Respected historian and travel writer John Man tells the remarkable story of the world's most famous traveler--Marco Polo--and the moment when East met West for the first time Marco Polo's late 13th-century journey from Venice, through Europe and most of Asia, to China is one of the most audacious in history. His account of his experiences, known simply as The Travels, uncovered an entirely new world of emperors and concubines, great buildings--"stately pleasure domes" in Coleridge's dreaming, huge armies, and imperial riches. He revealed the wonders of Xanadu, where the emperor Kublai Khan spent his summers. His book shaped the West's understanding of China for hundreds of years, inspiring Christopher Columbus, who was aiming for Kublai's China when he stumbled on America. John Man traveled in Marco Polo's footsteps to Xanadu, in search of the truth behind his stories; to separate legend from fact. He takes readers across north China to Xanadu, then to Beijing and through modern China, where Marco Polo's journey's can still be traced. Drawing on his own journey, archaeology, and archival study, John Man paints a vivid picture of the man behind the myth and the true story of the great court of Kublai Khan., **A SOURCE FOR MARCO POLO , A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES** Marco Polo's journey from Venice, through Europe and most of Asia, to the court of Kublai Khan in China is one of the most audacious in history. This delivery was earliest date! Condition, value, quality - all as described. (My mistake was not requiring the publishing date to be 1958. This was 1977.) This IS a Viking Portable Library copy of Dante's Divine Comedy in English, translated by Laurence Binyon, but it is with a cover DIFFERENT from what was shown. The tracking number was listed as from "UPS", but should have been listed as from "USPS." Contact with this seller alleviated tracking issues. I recommend this seller! Thank you!

Arrived 13 days after purchase. Digipak 3 CD came in brown paper packaging coated on the inside. Not much protection for cardboard digipack, somehow it arrived in near perfect condition. Could have used some bubble wrap /sturdy cardboard. Tracking gave no information. Messaged them & they assured me it was on it's way. Location reads Florida. They ship from all over / my package read Jamaica, NY. Got a 3 CD Deluxe Edition in GREAT CONDITION at BARGAIN PRICE ! Nervous ride/Happy ending 😀👍
