This interesting and well-illustrated study focuses on one particular element of the Roman navy, the "Classis Britannica." Mason draws on recent excavations of Saxon shore forts, the remains of the few warships that have been found, and the distribution of "Classis Britannica" tile stamps in England and along the coast of mainland Europe, to identify the organization of the British fleet, the location of its ports and harbors, the type of ships used, and the sea paths taken., This interesting and well-illustrated study focuses on one particular element of the Roman navy, the Classis Britannica . In providing the first comprehensive account of the Roman navy's importance in the conquest and defence of Britain, David Mason has redressed the balance. Combining archaeological evidence from recently excavated ships and harbour works with information from ancient sources, the author demonstrates the fleet's vital importance to the success of the Roman military conquest. He also provides new insights into the logistics and tactics of the Roman naval forces and their close cooperation with the Roman army.

In condition as described by seller, unfortunately there was a binding error during printing that was missed (15 pages were replaced with a duplicate 15 pages from another section) when informed vender checked inventory, no other identical books so they offered an alternate rare antique book but the book I was interested in at half the price was common so the seller refunded me the purchase price instead. Great seller.
