ReviewsTitle: Deal lsI. VFC benefits from book sale; author to sign copies at Skipjack Race Author: Richard Crumbacker Publisher: Crisfield Times Date: 9/2/09 What started out as calendar fundraiser has turned into a book full of pictures of the Deal Island area communities all to benefit the Deal Island Chance Volunteer Fire Company. Deal Island Then & Now by local author Claudia Mouery is the newest edition to the Arcadia Publishing library of popular Then and Now series and contrasts modern day photos with historic images that chronicle an area's past. Mrs. Mouery, a non-Somerset County native, who joined the fire company's Ladies Auxiliary after moving to Chance, networked with residents to get the old photos. "I met so many wonderful people," she said, and many were "thrilled" to have their shots published. She said had this information not been recorded soon, "it would be gone." The key to the book is that all profits are donated to the fire company. "It's their's forever," Mrs. Mouery said. It covers the communities of Chance, Dames Quarter, Deal Island and Wenona. The author will be at the 50th annual Skipjack Race Labor Day Monday starting at 11 a.m. to sign books. They are also available in Crisfield at Jane's Accents and The Weathered Porch. Her hope is that the book "will put [the Deal Island] community on the map. Most people, including Marylanders, know about many other locations on the Delmarva Peninsula but nothing about this area and the hard working people that live here."
SynopsisFour communities along Deal Island Road in Somerset County form the area known as Deal Island. Legend says the island was originally called Devils Island and was settled by pirates. Deal Island served as a prominent landmark as Capt. John Smith explored the Chesapeake Bay. For generations, the area has been mostly a watermen's community, but now it is also home to many retirees.
