Synopsis
In 2020, the world was short on emotional resources to cope with the scale of death the pandemic, COVID-19, was producing. In U.S. culture, people view death multiple times a week in crime dramas and participate in "taking out" others in video games. Yet most people have not seen a dead body, other than their deceased pets, until aged parents die or cell phones record police killings. The popular culture tells them to "get over it" when they lose a family member. "Denial is not an effective life strategy," Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, told the world as his state struggled to cope with unprecedented numbers of deaths, inadequate protective gear for hospital workers, and overwhelmed mortuaries. Denial was totally ineffective as the numbers rose, and later, when some communities opened bars and churches and eagerly embraced their former social lives, only to experience the numbers of the infected grow and one thousand Americans a day dying of the virus. But denial was our cultural default, that and secret terror. In this collection of stories, poems, memoirs, and information, 36 writers from across the US, Australia, Turkey, Britain, Bosnia and Herzegovina share their experiences of death, dying, grief, and recovery. The writers are Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Bah'ais, atheists, and New Age. They are different races and from different immigrant communities. Some write of family loss including suicide, others of war or devastating illness, others of rituals that help them recover. COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter are among the subjects addressed. The stories and poems presented here are moving and provocative, selected to present the amazing diversity of humankind as they cope with the unifying experience of death and loss. This collection is intended to help people traverse this time of international pandemic and fear and find companionship in their personal journeys as death crosses their paths. NOTE: Proceeds from sales of this book beyond the cost of publication will go to health care workers through international organizations fighting the novel corona virus., In 2020, the world was short on emotional resources to cope with the scale of death the pandemic, COVID-19, was producing. Denial was our cultural default, that and secret terror. How could we help? We invited submissions of pieces written about this much-avoided subject for possible inclusion in an anthology. Submissions came from people whose lives had been profoundly altered by deaths, people who had found ways to reorder their lives and find meaning, or at least some sort of solace, in this experience that none of us can avoid.Proceeds above the cost of publication go to health care workers combating the phenomenon transforming the world of 2020-21.The number and diversity of submissions moved us. They came from Australia, Turkey, and Bosnia and Herzegovina; from Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Baha'is, modern mystics, and agnostics, published writers and new voices. Stories, poems, memories, and essays address the many aspects of death--losing family members, the experience of dying, the disproportionate number of Black people killed by police, the ravages of COVID-19, war, suicide, the process of grieving, and letting go;We hope that you will be nourished as you look through others' eyes at what none of us can avoid. We hope your empathy will expand as you learn how others--including "death professionals"--cope.

Book arrived today, 2 days before deadline given by the seller. Well-packaged & in good condition. Price was very competitive, & the book was accurately listed. Great communication. I appreciate the seller getting back to me when I was having trouble tracking the book's delivery progress. Apparently there were 2 different tracking numbers - one in Canada & the other in the U.S., since it was initially shipped from Canada. Thank you very much for your quick response & helpful information.

As far as the item goes it was everything I was expecting and way better than I hoped for! Their packing was perfect and the item arrived unscathed. They sold for a very fair price when it comes to diecast. The seller description is a bit misleading when you’re waiting for tracking numbers, but their customer service communication is stellar!

The book arrived faster than advertised and came in flawless condition since it was so well packed. The price was great and so was the seller's customer service when I contacted them with a question. I would not hesitate to buy from this seller again!
