    Synopsis
This 1966 survey of the 'classic' period of Norwegian literature was the first book in English devoted to the period. Beginning with a historical survey, it turns to the individual authors, grouping minor figures together. Bjørnson and Ibsen naturally dominate the account, but the context is kept in view., This general survey of the 'classic' period of Norwegian literature provides an introduction for the general reader as well as the student. Professor Downs begins with a historical survey which explains the political background to this period of flowering. He then turns to the individual authors, treating the greatest individually, and grouping minor figures together. Bjornson and Ibsen naturally dominate the account, but they are seen as members of a national movement, and the general cultural and social background are kept in view. Final chapters look forward to 'the new century'. Originally published in 1966, this was the first book in English devoted entirely to the period. It is fuller than general histories of Scandinavian literature, yet more general than studies of single authors. The text assumes no knowledge of Norwegian but the footnotes help the specialist towards further reading, and discuss points of substance using some Norwegian.", This general survey of the 'classic' period of Norwegian literature provides an introduction for the general reader as well as the student. The book arrived swiftly packaged in a protective plastic envelope, but it was a paperback not hardcover as listed. I contacted seller and they apologized, refunded me and suggested several things to do with the book after allowing me to keep it. I have gone ahead and ordered a hardcover from the same seller. I’m a repeat customer and hope to remain so. This mixup was a first, but I’m very impressed with their prompt response and professionalism. Kudos :)

My complaint about large book sellers is they don’t securely package their books, and this was no exception. I sell books on eBay and when I do they are usually wrapped in bubble wrap and then with paper bags I obtain from stores and then I use good tape. I get lots of positive reviews for my secure wrapping. This book arrived in thin plastic with no padding. Yes, this was a good price, arrived quickly, and as listed . You get break on postage, use some of that savings for better packaging
