Synopsis
Turtle Island: An Introduction to Indigenous Studies provides students with unique snapshots into the lives and resiliency of Indigenous peoples of the North American continent, commonly referred to as Turtle Island by Native Americans and First Nations peoples. The carefully selected articles provide readers a glimpse into key historical events, survival strategies, and worldviews of Indigenous peoples spanning the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America. Over the course of six chapters, students read a variety of texts that celebrate the vibrant lives of Indigenous peoples and also highlight the survival tactics they've developed to meet the significant and often detrimental challenges of colonization. They learn about Indigenous peoples' conception of self as seen through childhood memories and oral traditions. The topics of oppression, colonialism, assimilation, self-determination, resiliency, and Indigeneity are explored. Readings about spirituality, health, language, and culture paint a picture of enduring culture and values. The anthology closes with chapters dedicated to the reassertion of rights by Indigenous peoples, activism, and empowerment. With a distinct focus on the lives of Indigenous peoples rather than a timeline of historic events, Turtle Island is well suited for courses in Indigenous studies and North American history., Provides students with unique snapshots into the lives and resiliency of Indigenous peoples of the North American continent, commonly referred to as Turtle Island by Native Americans and First Nations peoples. Great transaction, exactly as described, packed well, and promptly shipped on August 6th. Unfortunately the U.S. Postal Service took 23 calendar days to deliver the book. It was shipped from Pennsylvania, to Atlanta, past Alabama to Texas, enjoyed several days in Texas, then to Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Florida, back to Atlanta, finally to Birmingham, and Huntsville. The seller was very responsive and I decided it was interesting to see if/how the book would arrive. Thanks, Joe
