In this film noir spoof from Dennis Potter, mystery author Philip Marlow checks into the hospital with a bad skin condition, and his hallucinations project his psyche into his book's fictitious character, the "Singing Detective," and into his own boyhood memories. Featuring an award-winning performance from Michael Gambon as the bed-ridden crime-writer and Joanne Whalley as his beautiful and sensitive nurse, this is a masterpiece of TV drama, with impeccable attention to period detail and wonderful musical set-pieces.
