Reviews
Strait Talk is an excellent book, particularly for those who want to understand the turbulent triangular relationship between the US, Taiwan and China, and how it has been influenced by various people over the past six decades...[Tuck] covers events and policy debates from the days of the Truman presidency all the way through the end of the Bush administration in 2008... An important contribution of the book is that it shows how politicians and diplomats from former U.S. presidents Harry Truman to George W. Bush shaped policies, and how U.S. policy toward China and Taiwan varied significantly, depending on the background, knowledge and political insights of the people involved. Tuck is most unsparing in her criticism of former U.S. president Richard Nixon and his national security advisor, Henry Kissinger...Tuck's book makes an excellent contribution to better knowledge and understanding of U.S. policy towards Taiwan., Strait Talk is an excellent book, particularly for those who want to understand the turbulent triangular relationship between the US, Taiwan and China, and how it has been influenced by various people over the past six decades...[Tucker] covers events and policy debates from the days of the Truman presidency all the way through the end of the Bush administration in 2008... Tuck is most unsparing in her criticism of former U.S. president Richard Nixon and his national security advisor, Henry Kissinger...Tuck's book makes an excellent contribution to better knowledge and understanding of U.S. policy towards Taiwan., Although Washington's Taiwan policy has been outwardly clear and consistent since 1972--defined by the so-called communiqueacute; framework and the Taiwan Relations Act--Tucker shows that the actual negotiation record from Richard Nixon to George W. Bush was rife with confusion and mistrust. She focuses on the less-studied Washington-Taipei leg of the Beijing-Washington-Taipei triangle, tracing the interaction of policies and personalities with a level of detail made possible by extensive interviews and archival research and with a clarity of judgment made possible by a long familiarity with most of the protagonists. Tucker acknowledges that U.S. grand strategy during this time enjoyed some successes: China became a counterweight to the Soviet Union, and Taiwan survived. But she argues that the United States repeatedly yielded more to China than it had to, and the shoddy way it treated Taiwan created a legacy of mistrust not only in Taipei but also among allies throughout the region.

Synopsis
1898 Yorkshire--Aurora Pettigrew has it all, a loving family, a nice home, a comfortable life. She's waiting for the right man to offer her marriage, and the man for her is Reid Sinclair, heir to the Sinclair fortune and the love of her life. But, Reid's mother, Julia, is against the match and her ruthlessness unearths a family secret that will tear Aurora's world apart.Unwilling to bring shame on her family and needing answers to the allegations brought to light by Reid's mother, Aurora begins a long journey away from home. She leaves behind all that is familiar and safe to enter a world of mean streets and poor working class.Living in the tenements of York, surrounded by people of a class she'd never mixed with before, Aurora struggles to come to terms with the way her life has changed. By chance, she reconnects with a man from her past and before he leaves with the army to war in South Africa, he offers her security through marriage. Aurora knows she should be happy, but the memory of her love for Reid threatens her future. When tragedy strikes, can Aurora find the strength to accept her life and forget the past?

- e***n (392)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Ultimi 6 mesiAcquisto verificatoGreat transaction, exactly as described, packed well, and promptly shipped on August 6th. Unfortunately the U.S. Postal Service took 23 calendar days to deliver the book. It was shipped from Pennsylvania, to Atlanta, past Alabama to Texas, enjoyed several days in Texas, then to Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Florida, back to Atlanta, finally to Birmingham, and Huntsville. The seller was very responsive and I decided it was interesting to see if/how the book would arrive. Thanks, Joe
- 0***g (380)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoExcellent purchase. Was able to get all three items from the one seller. Seller was able to bundle all three items together into one package. Items as described and arrived in perfect condition. Good communication around shipping and tracking as items delayed and not able to be delivered by original estimate. Thanks to shipping updates I was able to track the items arriving before the extended delivery time. Thank you for making these items available on EBay.
