Reviews
Susan Neiman is a masterly storyteller; her new book Moral Clarity offers retellings of the Odyssey and the Book of Job that are themselves worth the price of admission. But she also has stories about the origins of her own position that place her in both larger intellectual narratives and more local political ones...Neiman's readings of the canon are inventive and illuminating..., Neiman's particular skill lies in expressing sensitivity, intelligence and moral seriousness without any hint of oversimplification, dogmatism, misplaced piety. She clearly and unflinchingly sees life as it is, but also sees how it might be, and could be, if we recaptured some of the hope and ideals that currently escape us., ADVANCE PRAISE FOR MORAL CLARITY With passion, wit, and high intelligence, Susan Neiman invites us to be moral grown-ups, which means to take on the question 'what ought to be done?' and actually to come up with an answer. Morally and politically compelling-and a delight to read. -Michael Walzer, author of Spheres of Justice and Just and Unjust Wars Susan Neiman's profound wisdom, courage, and vision give us a public conception of goodness and a reinvigorated progressive vision that will resonate with the religious while remaining thoroughly secular and democratic. She is a beacon of light and hope in our morally debased times. -Cornel West, author of Democracy Matters and Race Matters, ADVANCE PRAISE FOR MORAL CLARITY "With passion, wit, and high intelligence, Susan Neiman invites us to be moral grown-ups, which means to take on the question 'what ought to be done?' and actually to come up with an answer. But she is not some kind of scold or stodgy traditionalist, wagging a disapproving finger at our fall from a golden age. She is, in fact, a self-conscious woman of the left. She knows that our own debates over political and economic fundamentals have intellectual pedigrees worth learning...Ms. Neiman writes with verve and a sometimes epigrammatic wit...", Neiman''s particular skill lies in expressing sensitivity, intelligence and moral seriousness without any hint of oversimplification, dogmatism or misplaced piety. Synopsis
An inspiring and jargon-free look at how morals guide and inform our lives Moral philosopher Susan Neiman makes the tools of her trade relevant to real life in Moral Clarity , steering us clear of political dogma to offer instead a framework for forming clear opinions and taking responsible action on today's urgent political and social questions. Neiman reaches back to the classic virtues--happiness, reason, reverence, and hope--that were held high by every Enlightenment thinker and draws on literature, evolutionary theory, and contemporary research to show that the pursuit of moral clarity is open to all who are committed to these ideals, believers and nonbelievers alike., Susan Neiman is a moral philosopher committed to making the tools of her trade relevant to real life. In "Moral Clarity, "she shows how resurrecting a moral vocabulary--"good "and "evil, heroism "and "nobility"--can steer us clear of the dogmas of the right and the helpless pragmatism of the left. In search of a framework for forming clear opinions and taking responsible action on today's urgent political and social questions, Neiman reaches back to the eighteenth century, retrieving a set of virtues--happiness, reason, reverence, and hope--that were held high by every Enlightenment thinker. She shows that the pursuit of moral clarity is not a matter of religious faith but is open to all who are committed to these ideals, believers and nonbelievers alike. And she draws on literature, evolutionarytheory, and other contemporary research to show why, by keeping before us the distinction between the real and the possible, these ideals continue to guide and inspire., An inspiring and jargon-free look at how morals guide and inform our lives Moral philosopher Susan Neiman makes the tools of her trade relevant to real life in Moral Clarity, steering us clear of political dogma to offer instead a framework for forming clear opinions and taking responsible action on today's urgent political and social questions. Mistakenly ordered a paperback that I thought was a hardcover, not sellers fault; it was described properly on the listing. Seller still processed a refund the day I went to return the item and let me keep the item anyway. A+++ service. Book arrived quickly in great condition and for a great price. Thank you so much! Amazing seller!
