"Shadow the Hedgehog" for the Microsoft Xbox is the first video game to explore this SEGA character in full. While Shadow was previously seen in games like "Sonic Adventure 2" and "Sonic Heroes," his past was a mystery. In "Shadow the Hedgehog," you'll uncover this character's tragic past and learn what drives him. When an evil race of aliens invades the world, it's up to Shadow to either stop them or help plunge the world into ruin. Your choices in the game will decide the ending and what kind of character Shadow becomes. SEGA developed and published this game alongside members of Sonic Team. It was originally released for the Microsoft Xbox in 2005.The gameplay first comes across as similar to other video games in the "Sonic the Hedgehog" series. You'll race across levels at the speed of light, collecting rings as you go. Bumping into an enemy causes you to lose your rings. Bumping into an enemy when you have no rings causes you to lose a life and start the level over again. Each level features numerous cutscenes to advance the plot. Each level also culminates in a boss battle against screen-filling bosses of epic proportions. Where "Shadow the Hedgehog" differs from other "Sonic" games is in its approach to combat. Sonic defeats enemies by jumping or spinning into them. This dark hedgehog, on the other hand, uses an array of weapons to dispatch his foes. This black hedgehog will brandish everything from machine guns to bazookas to clear enemies out from his path. When this hedgehog is without his firearms, he'll use weapons in his environment instead. A street sign will suddenly become an instrument of destruction in the hands of this dark hedgehog. You can also ride vehicles in each level. While these vehicles are slower than Sonic and Shadow, they have special abilities to compensate for that. Throughout each level, you can find Chaos Emeralds. When found, these Chaos gems will help recover Shadow's memory. They also grant Shadow the Hedgehog unique abilities, such as slowing down time.Each stage in "Shadow the Hedgehog" for the Xbox has numerous variations. Before a stage starts, you can choose from one of three mission types: Hero, Normal, or Dark. The Hero missions allow you to work with Sonic and his friends on the side of good. The Dark missions involve you working with Dr. Eggman and the evil aliens. Normal missions revolve around you trying to recover your memory. "Shadow" for the Xbox has 10 different endings, depending on the type of mission you select before each level. While you can complete the game in six hours, you'll enjoy replaying it to see the different endings.When you finish the single-player game, you can play games against your friends in multiplayer mode. This mode supports up to two players for some intense head-to-head action. In certain levels of the single-player campaign, a second player can also take control of characters such as Sonic. "Shadow the Hedgehog" is a worthy inclusion to your "Sonic" library of games. It adds depth to the character and adds more layers to his rivalry with Sonic.
