Dead Space 2 for the PC is the second installment in the series of games, continuing from where its predecessor left off and bringing new players up to speed with a creative ‘Previously, on Dead Space’ video. Set three years after the events of Dead Space, Dead Space 2 again centers around the protagonist Isaac Clarke and his battle against the alien hybrid Necromorphs (the mutated, reanimated corpses of people) – this time on Saturn’s moon Titan. Characterized by its cinematic suspense and immersive terror, the gloomy game world is populated with all manner of enemy Necromorphs, from the intelligent and stealthy Stalkers to the disturbing Lurkers. A wide range of other creatures come with varying stats and abilities, including scaling walls, spitting acid, exploding, and slashing, all while charging at Isaac from any direction. Challenging gameplay mechanics combine with smooth and responsive controls, allowing players to take down their enemies with the requisite multiple, strategically placed shots to enemies’ limbs. Exploring the world and its 15 stages, brings Isaac into encounters with a range of different environments, including a creepy Unitologist temple and ruined residential zones, as well as zones without gravity – all serving to further the story. Dead Space 2 on the PC also benefits from a multiplayer, or Outbreak, mode, allowing up to eight players to go up against each other – as humans with in-game objectives or as Necromorphs (alongside AI-controlled characters) out to stop them. Human player characters start with a small range of weapons and can unlock more as the game progresses. Experience is gained in the multiplayer mode by carrying out various actions. These include healing or rescuing teammates, inflicting damage (for variable points), killing enemies, assisting with kills, completing an objective, and ultimately winning rounds. Penalties are applied for suicides and friendly fire, for which experience points are deducted from players’ totals. Dead Space 2 has an ESRB Mature 17+. Minimum hardware requirements are a Pentium 4 2.8GHz or Athlon 64 3000+ CPU with a GeForce 8500 GT or Radeon X1600 graphics card. However, it is recommended to run the game on a Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66 GHz or Athlon II X2 250 CPU with a GeForce 8800 GTS or Radeon HD 3800 series graphics card. As a general guide for PC owners, the game requires a minimum of 1 GB RAM on a Windows XP 32 operating system and 2GB on Windows Vista or 7, Direct X 9 and 10 GB of free HDD space.
