Synopsis
Take an inside look into the history of one of the world's most enigmatic military forces: the French Foreign Legion. Using an aggressive and arduous training program, The French Foreign Legion has turned itself into one of the world's elite forces, a status it has continually maintained in battles of extraordinary courage and bloodshed. Yet it remains mysterious, the stuff of legends and Hollywood movies. History of the French Foreign Legion reveals the reality behind this compelling unit, from its participation in the conquest of Algeria in the 1840s to its role in the war against terrorism today. Illustrated with 120 images, this absorbing study explores the ascetic lifestyle of a legionnaire, with firsthand accounts of training and punishments; dispels myths about joining the Legion, and describes in detail the recruitment and selection process. Chapters on specialist training discuss the Legion soldiers' technical and tactical excellence as well the units' superb equipment and weaponry. This book is a fascinating journey into a military world that is almost unique in the history of men-at-arms., The French Foreign Legion-La Légion Étrangére-remains one of the world's most enigmatic military forces. Created in France in 1831 by King Louis Philippe and immediately posted to the scorching deserts of Algeria, the unit went on to become renowned for its strict discipline and its absolute disregard for death in battle. Unlike most military units in the world its ranks are open to foreigners, and traditionally it received many troubled or criminal individuals fleeing their own countries. Today, much has changed. The Legion now numbers just 8900 men, and is far more discriminating about who it recruits. Using an aggressive and arduous training program, it has turned itself into one of the world's true elites, a status it has reinforced in battles of extraordinary courage and bloodshed. History of the French Foreign Legion reveals the facts and reality behind this compelling organization. Its record in combat is described in detail, from the Legion's deployment during the conquest of Algeria in the 1830s to its peacekeeping role in the Balkans during the 1990s. The ascetic lifestyle of a Legionnaire is explored in depth, including accounts of training, punishments, and the adjustment to becoming a member of the "family" of the Legion. Finally, a section is devoted to the equipment and weaponry of the Legion units, including everything from the famous dress uniform to the AMX 10RC tank. Lavishly illustrated with more than 120 photographs, maps, and artworks. History of the French Foreign Legion is a fascinating journey into the world of a military unit that is unique in the history of men-at-arms. - e***v (126)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Ultimi 6 mesiAcquisto verificatoOverall, it went well. Good communication. I wanted the book to be shipped in a box, because the value and scarcity of the volume I purchased deserved it, however, the company is too large and I was informed the book would be shipped in a plastic mailer. Somehow it didn’t arrive very damaged, a little bump, but for the price I can’t complain. Over all I am satisfied, but if you’re a book collector, as I am, you may want to find another seller.Aurora: The Dayspring, or Dawning of the Day in the East, Boehme, Jacob, 9781558 (N° 236039083546)
- s***a (766)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoThis company has been, in my experience, a mixed bag. This title was NOT worth the price because it came with highlighting, ink underlineing & writing in the margins...not the quality that they advertised. I have on other occasions gotten books in great condition, however, that were listed in less than the condition advertised so it goes both ways...but I'd much prefer a company that delivers exactly what they advertise. I guess good help is hard to find. The book was well packaged & came fast.
- a***a (14)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Ultimi 6 mesiAcquisto verificatoThe shipping was quicker than I expected and book condition was exactly as advertised! Price I paid also was fair and reasonable so I could purchase. The appearance of the book showed no indication of tear or damage and book was wrapped very good and tight. I recommend this seller for his best customer service! The Book of the Revelation: A Commentary Based on a Study of Twenty-Three Psychi (N° 335856777005)
