The shaft diameter is 1/16" with 4 ribs for press fitting them securly in the hole. My cars are Lifelike, not Athearn,. so I had to drill the hole in the car, for the brake wheel shaft to fit in. I also have flat cars both Lifelike, & Tyco, Bachmann, etc. I'm gonna use a stainless steel straight pin, to go through the wheel, by drilling a hole in the wheel, & into the car bed. 0.025" diameter. I currently have 20 + cars to fix this way. :-)
