The 2nd generation Amazon Echo Dot smart assistant is the scaled-down version of their larger Echo system. This second generation model launched in 2016 to build upon the success of the original Echo Dot and came with a couple of new features as well as a white color option. When used as a smart speaker, the Echo Dot can link to a smart device using Bluetooth. If you want a bigger sound than this miniature device can offer, you can also link it to external speakers using the same Bluetooth connection or a 3.5 millimeter audio jack. The Echo Dot is a lot more than just a wireless speaker, though. It is also a hub for Amazon’s Alexa smart assistant. When the Echo Dot’s microphone array picks up Alexa’s wake word, she comes online to give you the news or weather updates, turn on a music streaming service, or even tell you a joke. The Echo Dot can also be linked to apps and used as a hub for a wide range of other smart home devices. If the Echo Dot is connected to the right devices, Alexa can adjust your thermostat, turn your lights on and off, and control your home security system.
