'I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is active in the field of nature or biodiversity conservation.'Pascal Lammar, Human Ecology Dept, Free University Brussels, "Biodiversity loss is a complex socionatural problem. This Root Causes project accomplishes two agenda: (1) to develop "an analytical approach to help identify, analyze, and organize the many complex factors that drive biodiversity loss" and (2) to develop "recommendations for how institutions and governments can, and should, address the root causes of biodiversity loss." The first five chapters ("An Emerging Consensus on Biodiversity Loss," "A Framework for Analyzing Biodiversity Loss," "Ten Case Studies: An Overview," "Main Findings and Conclusions of the Root Causes Project," and "Recommendations on Addressing the Root Causes of Biodiversity Loss") succinctly set out the organization of the project and its recommendations; the final ten individually treat in case-study fashion the ten areas of the world (the Cerrado of Brazil, Cameroon, the southwestern forests of China, the Danube River Basin, India's Chilika Lake, a biosphere reserve in the Mexican Yucatan, mangrove forests in Pakistan and Tanzania, three of the Philippine islands, and the highlands of Vietnam) where the project was run to gain on-site familiarity with the problems at hand. No color graphics; some stylistic dryness; but generally the writing, editing, and accompanying figures, tables, and charts are clear and instructive. A significant treatment of a pressing worldwide problem. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty. --- C. H. Smith, Western Kentucky University in CHOICE

Synopsis
The world is losing species and biodiversity at an unprecedented rate. The causes go deep and the losses are driven by a complex array of social, economic, political and biological factors at different levels. Immediate causes such as over-harvesting, pollution and habitat change have been well studied, but the socioeconomic factors driving people to degrade their environment are less well understood. This book examines the underlying causes. It provides analyses of a range of case studies from Brazil, Cameroon, China, Danube River Basin, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Tanzania and Vietnam, and integrates them into a new and interdisciplinary framework for understanding what is happening. From these results, the editors are able to derive policy conclusions and recommendations for operational and institutional approaches to address the root causes and reverse the current trends. It makes a contribution to the understanding of all those - from ecologists and conservationists to economists and policy makers - working on one of the major challenges we face.

The book that was shown was not the book that I received. Nonetheless, when I informed the seller that it wasn't the item they advertised-/they were more than willing to make it right. Since they didn't have another copy of the title I was expecting, they promptly issued an apology; and refund full refund. I really appreciated the speed at which they were willing to make things right with this transaction. I will definitely not hesitate to do business with them again. Thank You!
