Als Nachfolger zweier in ihrer Gestalt nicht uberlieferter Vorgangerbauten ist der zwischen ca. 1270 und 1440 entstandene und in seinen mittelalterlichen Teilen trotz der langen Bauzeit wie aus einem Guss wirkende Backsteinbau des Schweriner Doms ein wertvolles Zeugnis mittelalterlicher Sakralarchitektur. Sowohl seine aussere Erscheinung als auch die raumliche Gestaltung des Inneren sind Ausdruck der geistigen Impulse, die von den bischoeflichen Auftraggebern ebenso ausgingen wie von den Einflussen der zeitgenoessischen Kunst Frankreichs und Westeuropas. Das ausgehende 19. Jahrhundert hat der Kirche mit dem monumentalen Westturm und der neugotischen Ausstattung eigene, aus heutiger Sicht nicht weniger bedeutende Akzente hinzugefugt. Die jungste umfassende Restaurierung des Innenraumes von 1980 brachte die strenge Schoenheit und Eleganz der gotischen Architektur voll zur Wirkung. Im Dom erhielten sich nur wenige, dafur aber sehr qualitatvolle Ausstattungsstucke aus mittelalterlicher Zeit. Dem 19. Jahrhundert verdankt der Dom unter anderem die farbenprachtigen Glasmalereien der ehemaligen Hl.-Blut-Kapelle und die grosse Ladegast-Orgel.
