Trumpeter Ernest 'Red' Nichols was an influential bandleader during the heyday of jazz in the Roaring Twenties, who nurtured the talents of such jazz luminaries as Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Glenn Miller. Nichols was also in constant demand as a studio musician, and, as a result, his musical output ranks him among the most prolific jazz musicians in history. This handy one-volume reference supplies jazz scholars, collectors, and fans with a complete, chronological bio-discography to all issued recordings (including compact disc) as well as unissued material, radio and television appearances, concerts, interviews, and privately owned home recordings spanning the period 1942-1965.

...impressive...the book will stand on its own merits as one of the finest compilations of the historic record of a jazzman's later life...details are thick...the answers are here...a jazz historian's treasure trove...I hungered for more...a truly worthy record of Red Nichols..., ...impressive...substantial...a monumental research effort...an incredibly detailed 'bio-discography'...four authors were involved in the preparation of this massive study (it would have been a Herculean undertaking for one person to produce such results)...a fundamental resource for Nichols' fans as well as all serious students of jazz history. It is an heroic compilation of disparate data...let me reiterate that this is a major study, carefully researched and clearly presented...I can happily recommend the book to you., Interviews with family, friends, fellow-musicians, groupies, and other associates of Nichols through the years contain good stuff. I wish there were more., ...massive and thorough...should prove to be the definitive discography, of the postwar Nichols, for the foreseeable future...the thoroughness of this work and the cross indexes (song title/musician) will pretty much give enough info for anyone to deduce an approximate date/personnel with just tune titles. A loving effort., ...bold typeface for the headings makes this volume easy to read. With this tool, patrons can trace the careers of Nichols and several sidemen and soloists., ...the mass of detail assembled is breathtaking. I know how satisfying it is to dig out facts like these and the book is a wonderful record for posterity...a comprehensive song title index are both provided and are invaluable..., ...comprehensive account...his compositions, recording works with a number of bands are all here...a complete record...invaluable to fans of Red Nichols.
