Product Information
From Pierre de Fermat to Samuel Taylor Coleridge to Graham Greene, readers have related to books through the notes they write in the margins. In this pioneering book-the first to examine the phenomenon of marginalia-H.J. Jackson surveys an extraordinary range of annotated books to explore the history of marginalia, the forms they take, the psychology that underlies them, and the reactions they provoke. Based on a study of thousands of books annotated by readers both famous and obscure over the last three centuries, this book reveals the intensity of emotion that characterizes the process of reading. For hundreds of years, readers have talked to other people in the margins of their books-not only to authors, but also to friends, lovers, and future generations. With an infectious enthusiasm for her subject, Jackson reflects on the cultural and historical value of writing in the margins, examines works that have invited passionate annotation, and presents examples of some of the most provocative marginalia. Imaginative, amusing, and poignant, this book will be treasured by-and maybe even annotated by-anyone who cares about reading.

- a***i (357)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoI had an outstanding experience with this seller! The item was exactly as described, and it arrived well-packaged and in perfect condition. The seller was incredibly responsive and helpful, answering all my questions promptly. The shipping was super fast, and I received the package within just a few days. A truly professional and reliable seller who goes above and beyond to provide exceptional service. I look forward to doing business with them again in the future. Thank you so much!
- v***k (4205)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoA series of unfortunate events. Ordered with a dvd which was found wanting so cancelled and refunded quickly. A book arrived, but not the two books (and slipcase) advertised. ISBN issue? Initially I could not locate it as I expected an appropriately bulky package. Once notified, WoB customer service stepped up and I was asked to choose a book at a similar price point as compensation. This is why I use WoB so often - things do go wrong sometimes but they respond appropriately. Many many thanks.
- l***p (204)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Ultimi 6 mesiAcquisto verificatoI’ve ordered several books from this seller so far (I’m currently researching the S&D as at least 3 generations of my family worked on the line) and they have all been as described and well packaged, arriving in good time. Out of all the orders I’ve only had one book that got lost in the post. The seller was very helpful and sorted a replacement for me, replying quickly too (thanks again :) would definitely recommend them :D
