The measuring vessel is very small and relies on a controlled leak through the piston to limit the amount of air in the vessel. The rate at which you breathe in is therefore critical and hence the need for the manometer. I accidentally got some asthma inhaler from my breath into the device and this altered the measuring vessel reading for several weeks and is still not giving the same readings as it did originally.
