I can boot from the ssd without any issues, as long as the initramfs has udev and libusb in it, so it can mount the drive before the OS is up. The standard advice is that these adapters won't work with hdds or cd/dvd drives, because those drives take too much power, power that the usb, unless it is powered, can't provide (~8 W). The stats on the SSD say it is ~4 W, or .8 amp at 5V, and it is having no problems.
