Notes
For Better or For Worse "For better or for worse," a catch-all phrase in marriage vows, but also words befitting the times and tribulations of an artist. Joey T. (the T. is for Tuchrello, but got shortened for the stage) bares his soul on his debut of original material, "For Better or For Worse," an album both rich in dreamy love songs and harsh realities. Don't worry about sappy ballads. Joey puts his rock pedigree forward first here, wrapping true, gritty emotion in guitar-driven nuggets that stick in your head for days. Joey T. has a working musician background, performing on the Rochester, NY scene for some 20 years. Taking something from his first band, the 50's-styled (compete with slicked-back hair and snappy silk jackets) Ruby Shooz, and even more from his recent 70's tribute show band, Joey T. & the Formula, this album combines sweet harmonies and catchy melodies with unforgettable hooks. Mastering the art of becoming another singer as a cover artist, Joey's vocals have an instant familiarity that adds an extra dimension to each song. Joey' T.s pop masterpiece, "Light Your Torches," is the perfect vehicle for these rough-hewn vocals (sometimes compared to Bob Segar) a voice that conveys the emotion of a song tenfold. More love-is-a-battlefield type tunes come forth on the slowed down and serious track, "For Better or For Worse," about a marriage at it's end, but not finished. The southern bent of "Warm Light" rocks out into guitar-heaven, yet pauses for an Allman Brothers effect, as Joey T. sings with raw honesty, "Why can't I just let go of this extra baggage that I don't need/ Sun, won't you break through and shine a warm light on me?" "I Refuse to Fall" finds Joey T.'s whiskey-soaked vocal assault more of an audition for Lynyrd Skynyrd, complete with a cool, southern-ized guitar solo. Joey T. and his aces band (which includes ex-Cheater frontman, Jeff Cosco and numerous Lou Gramm band members) rock out with abandon on his angry rant to psychics on "Should We Believe." As he questions the motives behind these characters, he adds a dose of tongue-in-cheek humor that keeps it fun, singing, "Are you always around me getting me through the day," to these so-called spirits. More topical stuff ensues on the political scorcher, "What Will It Take," written pre-Obama, mid-Bush. Surprises on "For Better or For Worse," include a striking cover of "Rainmaker," first made classic by The Partridge Family, but done here as a showcase of climactic guitars and mesmerizing harmonies. Kudos to Joey T. for making such a courageous, interesting song choice. While you hear grade A pop throughout Joey T.'s debut solo effort, and first foray into original material, his Southern rock influences also come through in spades. Joey even unleashes a little country in the traditional "Will The Circle Be Unbroken," (Think Eagles) adding a surprise finishing touch to an album that allows Joey T. to reveal his inner heart, finally.
