As hosted by Brigadier General Stanley M. Ulanoff, a preeminent World War II historian and one of the most decorated of all veterans from that massive conflict, this set brings together several short period documentaries charting the trajectory and gestalt of the war. THE WORLD AT WAR and DECEMBER 7TH chronicle the events that transpired from 1931 to 1941 and drew the U.S. into the said global conflict, including the bloody nightmare of Pearl Harbor. THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY marks a historical first, as the first major documentary of a war battle shot in color; the film also depicts various other activities undertaken by the U.S. Army in 1943, including General Patton marching through Sicily and the fall of Benito Mussolini. THE NORMANDY INVASION and THE VICTORY depict the most famous landing of World War II as shot by cameramen in the U.S. Coast Guard, as well as the major events of 1945 such as the surrenders of the United States and Japan. The last two films, "To the Shores of Iwo Jima" and "The Battling Bastards of Bataan," contrast the American victory at Iwo Jima with the gruesome defeats on Bataan and Corregidor.
