Product Information
Hull was first built as a port by the Cistercian monks of Meaux Abbey, to export wool from their rapidly expanding sheep flocks. Before the end of the 13th century Hull had been acquired by Edward I, who developed it as a royal port, and from then on Hull has been one of the countrya s most important ports. The port makes Hull a highly defensible strategic position. In the 16th century Hulla s defiance of King Charles I helped drag the country into civil war, while on Town Taking Day, celebrated in Hull for more than a century after the event, Hulla s foiling of a Catholic plot lost James the whole of north England. Hull established a reputation as a centre of Puritanism, condemning theatre-going, gambling, drinking and idleness. The saying a From Hull, Hell, and Halifax, Good Lord deliver usa , indicated the ferocious treatment vagrants could expect in the town. For Hulla s puritans, poverty and sin were very closely related and often required similar treatment. By the time of Queen Victoriaa s accession Hull was six times as large as it had been in 1700, but after the First World War Hull lost its place as the third largest port in the country, and since the Second World War, in which more than 90 per cent of all Hulla s houses were either damaged or destroyed, Hull could recover only slowly. More recently, unemployment is still about twice the national average, and terrible flooding in 2010 left parts of the city uninhabitable. Nevertheless, Hull remains one of the countrya s largest and most important ports and this history of its trade, religious and political controversy, architecture, pirates and de la Poles is well researched, beautifully illustrated, and sure to please both Hulla s inhabitants and visitors alike.

- e***a (382)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoVery impressed - top eBay seller! The 100% rating is well deserved. The condition of this book (from Oakwood Press) was better than many I've purchased new in other bookshops!! I would describe it as immaculate. Price was very competitive indeed, most sellers want a significantly higher price for this secondhand book in not so good condition. Very well packaged with invoice. Arrived as promised - the seller kindly arranged to delay posting as I was away on holiday. Would definitely use again
- e***6 (772)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Ultimi 6 mesiAcquisto verificatoWell packed, excellent condition, arrived on time. But not enough info was provided in the seller's description. I thought I'd ordered a catalogue of the paintings exhibited in the 1951 RA Ecole de Paris exhibition - what arrived was an illustrated selection of 'highlights'. My fault I suppose - the covers of both are identical except for the price (the one I received was the more expensive - 2/6 as opposed to 1/-!). But vendor, please in future provide EXACT details of what you're selling.L'Ecole De Paris 1900-1950, Royal Academy of Arts, Very Good Book (N° 255960552541)

Book is exactly as described in the posting, mint condition and never been read. Happy to report that the book was undamaged in transit so not bent and no creases. Excellent comms. as well. Very pleased indeed with my purchase. A professional and efficient service from this bookshop.
