Synopsis
In antiquity Archilochus of Paros was considered a poet rivalled only by Homer and Hesiod, yet he has been relatively neglected by modern scholarship. This first complete commentary on his work provides textual, literary, and historical analysis of all of his surviving poetry alongside the fragmentary texts and brand new translations., In antiquity Archilochus of Paros was considered a poet rivalled only by Homer and Hesiod, yet he has been relatively neglected by modern scholarship. This is largely due to the fragmentary state of his surviving poetry, though our knowledge has expanded significantly since the middle of the twentieth century as new papyrological finds continue to augment the corpus and our understanding of the poet and his work evolves. This volume is the first ever complete commentary on Archilochus, filling a substantial gap in scholarship on archaic Greek poetry and playing an important and timely role in re-establishing him as a major author and in locating the recent discoveries in the broader context of his oeuvre. Presenting the fragmentary texts alongside brand new translations, the volume also contains a comprehensive introduction offering an accessible guide to Archilochus' work and context, and a detailed commentary providing textual, literary, and historical analysis of all of his surviving poetry and discussing broader questions of performance and genre in early Greek poetic culture. The scope and depth of the analysis not only highlights the diversity and sophistication of Archilochus' work, but also sheds new light on our understanding of Greek iambus and elegy, while his influence on later writers means that the commentary will be of significance to scholars and students of Hellenistic and Roman literature, and the later lyric tradition, as well as archaic and classical Greek literature.

- m***r (1487)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Ultimi 6 mesiAcquisto verificatoThere was a tear in the spine that was not pictured, but for the price agreed upon I think this is negligible; however, seller would not combine shipping costs with two much less expensive items that were ordered on the same day, although they all shipped together; I asked about it both before the items shipped and after they arrived, and the seller gave no reply in either case, even to say, "sorry, I don't combine shipping"
- e***a (1430)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoItem arrived today, as described. Excellent condition, just as per the listing. This book completes my Wild Cards series and was at a very good price (I've seen this book for sale online at three figure sums). For a 30 year old paperbook the appearance was superb. Very well packaged, which is important as it came from the US. Would recommend this seller to International buyers. Thank you.
- o***o (3299)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Ultimi 6 mesiAcquisto verificatoAlbums as described! Many collectors aren't aware that this was actually how the album was issued in early 1976, with one being Apple, the other being orange Capitol. VERY hard to find! Seller does not price-gouge on shipping, either! Charges actual post office shipping rates, which is very conscientious. One minor thing to collectors, seller ships records inside the covers instead of behind them, which more often than not, splits one or more seams during transit. Otherwise, highly recommended!
