When I went to install the trim on my car, most of the pairs of tabs had one of the tabs break off. Additionally, I think it would be just fine to reduce the size of the tab that sticks out. It will still be secure enough but less deflection in the tab to cause it to break! Alternatively, maybe suggest heating the part before installation to soften the plastic. Cheers!
