Synopsis
(back cover) Icons of Culture: Fashion pays homage to the industry's 50 most influential personalities of the last 150 years and chronicles 10 of the most significant developments and trends in the fashion world. Following the lives and creations of key designers from around the world, such as Mariano Fortuny, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, and Manolo Blahnik, this unique volume describes the fashion designers who have inspired the way society dresses and discusses the key features and movements that have influenced fashion, from haute couture to fashion photography. Everything you need to know about the innovations and creations of the fashion world is packed into this one essential pocketful of knowledge. (front flap) From Coco Chanel to Christian Dior and from Giorgio Armani to Vivienne Westwood, Icons of Culture: Fashion offers a rich and comprehensive introduction to the lives and accomplishments of 50 key individuals who dominated the fashion industry from the late nineteenth century to the present day. The most influential players in their field, these designers are the innovators who pioneered new fabrics, who challenged the conventions of everyday society, and who broke new ground with their inspirational designs. Alongside their remarkable contributions, this book examines 10 major developments in the history of fashion, from the inspired use of denim for leisurewear to the rise of the supermodel. Icons of Culture: Fashion gives you fascinating insights into the creative minds of the trendsetters and style shapers of the last 150 years. Here are the radical ideas and concepts that changed the face of fashion forever. (back flap) Art and design historian and lecturer Bonnie English has taught theory at the Queensland College of Art in Australia since 1975. Her teaching experience has focused on the visual arts history of the twentieth century. Her research interests deal with the history of fashion design and the interrelationship of fashion and art. In 1997, her CD-ROM Fashion and Art won a national ASCILITE award from Griffith University in Australia. It was the first multimedia flexible learning award given by this university. Bonnie was curator of Griffith University's Tokyo Vogue exhibition in 1999, the first major fashion design exhibition held in Queensland, Australia., Highlighted in this volume are the pioneers and innovators in the world of haute couture. They include Jean Patou, whose Paris couture house led fashion in the 1920s and'30s, Coco Chanel, who brought comfort and practicality to haute couture, Elsa Schiaparelli, who collaborated in her designs with surrealist painter Salvador Dali, Mary Quant, who designed for London's youth culture in the "swinging sixties," and Gianni Versace, champion of the supermodel. Others include Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Guccio Gucci, Philip Treacy, Levi Strauss, and 40 others. Small in size but filled with information and insights, each Icons of Culture title is a collection of brief, pithy, and enlightening biographies of men and women who have made their mark and left lasting influences in the lively arts. Scattered among these capsule biographies are two-page overviews that examine various aspects of the art. Handsomely designed and accessible to laypersons, these books make fine quick-reference sources while also providing enjoyable reading for inquisitive minds. Illustrations in color and black and white on most two-page spreads.

- e***- (121)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoUnfortunately I received a damaged book, the item and the package both were damaged and it was clearly evident its appearance that it happened during transit. The seller was very understanding and gave me a full refund for the damaged book, though it was no fault of their own. Other than the damage, the book was as described, the quality and condition aside from the damaged spot was like new. The cost of the book was reasonable. I would definitely purchase from the seller again.
- v***v (2098)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Ultimi 6 mesiAcquisto verificatoAlthough this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate. How to chalk talk, by Harlan Tarbell (N° 197064259889)
